Opened in 1930, Eaton's College Street was the largest homewares store in the British Empire, with an impressive 600,000 square feet of shopping space.
Crowning this majestic store was the Seventh Floor Round Room restaurant, where generations of downtown shoppers enjoyed lunch in Art Deco splendour. The Round Room Restaurant became one of the legendary department store restaurants of North America, joining the ranks of great department store restaurants, such as Marshall Fields Walnut Room, Le 9 in Eaton's Montreal, and the Grill Room in Daytons Minneapolis, to name a few.
Eaton's College Street and the Round Room restaurant closed in 1977 when the Toronto Eaton Centre opened with a new Eaton's downtown flagship store. Eaton's College Street was converted for retail and office uses, and the building is now known as College Park. After being left abandoned for over 20 years, the Seventh Floor and old Round Room restaurant were restored and christened as the Carlu event venue. She could often be found dining in the Round Room.
